Parksville

Before Spanish explorers arrived in the Parksville, BC, area in 1791, the area was inhabited by several Coast Salish Indigenous groups: Qualicum, Snaw-naw-as (Nanoose), and Snuneymuxw nations. A long-time outpost on the English River, McBride Junction on the Esquimalt and Nanaimo (E & N) Railway line spurred the growth of the logging industry and tourism began to blossom as Vancouver Islanders were drawn to Parksville’s incredible beaches.

The Village of Parksville was incorporated as a city in 1981. Being built on the back of the spacious Parksville Bay and Craig Bay beaches encouraged an abundance of motels, stores, resorts, and campgrounds in and around our community. Since 1982 Parksville has been the site of a sandcastle-building competition from mid-July to mid-August. Known as "Parksville Beachfest," the event is the only official qualification event held in Canada for the World Championship of Sand Sculpting.
