Nanoose Bay

Tucked in between Parksville and Nanaimo, Nanoose Bay gets its name from the Nanoose First Nation people, who called the adjacent peninsula Berry Point. Known as Arlington until 1916, the name was changed to coincide with the Nanoose Bay train station on the Esquimalt and Nanaimo (E & N) Railway line, which was responsible for the establishment of a town in the mostly rural community.

Nanoose Bay, BC, remains primarily rural today, though the Red Gap Centre adds a modern retail and commercial flavour to our community. Residents of Nanoose Bay and nearby communities are able to interact with nature at the Qualicum National Wildlife Area Nanoose Bay – a lowland coastal ecosystem, primarily inhabited by migratory birds, that includes intertidal marsh habitats and estuarine ecosystems.
