There’s been a lot of commotion around hearing care recently, especially with the release of the latest Apple iOS 18 features surrounding voice isolation and music haptics. Hearing care isn’t quite the taboo it used to be!
Each year, we prioritize getting our teeth cleaned, our eyes tested, and our physical health checked – but when was your last hearing test?
A few studies have come out in recent years connecting hearing loss challenges to all sorts of negative side effects: an increased fall risk, cognitive decline, and dementia, to name a few.
Thankfully, there’s one study that shows a much more hopeful conclusion: hearing aids, when used correctly and consistently, could actually boost your lifespan.
Dr. Janet Choi from the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine took on the researching role, studying how hearing aids affected almost 10,000 individuals with hearing loss challenges over a decade timespan.
She found that out of the two groups of participants – ones who wore hearing aids frequently versus ones who didn’t wear them at all – the group who wore hearing aids consistently had a 24 percent lower risk of premature mortality.
When you integrate your hearing aids into your day-to-day life, the benefits are staggering – including a longer lifespan!
How Do Hearing Aids Increase My Life Expectancy?
Dr. Choi, a hearing aid wearer herself, emphasizes that hearing aids aren’t the only solution to a longer lifespan; rather, wearing your devices consistently when needed (and even when not needed) is what grants wearers that longer lifespan statistic.
Professional hearing care can save lives, bring people together, and keep you safe and active in your life – but Dr. Choi was amazed to find that just 12 percent of the participants wore their hearing aids actively outside of the study.
Hearing loss happens gradually; quite often, you won’t realize that it’s bothering your day-to-day life until it’s challenging you at work, at home, or in your social life.
People often neglect to wear their hearing aids regularly and never adapt to using them every day. Of course, it makes sense: negative stigmas associated with hearing aids make people shy away from seeking out hearing care until it’s an absolute necessity.
Thankfully, today’s advanced prescription hearing aids aren’t the clunky, awkward devices of old. They’re more discreet and significantly more powerful than they used to be – some models can even be inserted deep into your ear canal, so they’re entirely invisible!
Regular hearing aid wear and hearing tests can help your ears stay healthy so that you in turn can live a happy, healthy life for as long as possible.
