Qualicum Beach, BC, located within the traditional territory of the Qualicum First Nation, drew First Nation peoples from all over to gather camas flowers in the spring and chum salmon in the fall. The area was practically deserted in the early 1860s due to the smallpox epidemic, but settlers returned in the 1880s and began to thrive thanks to the Nanaimo to Parksville Highway, which was extended to Qualicum in 1894.
Tourism has become a thriving industry in Qualicum, which draws visitors with its year-round farmers’ market and annual celebrations that include: Canada Day and Family Day (pancake breakfast, parade, music, and other live entertainment), the Brant Wildlife Festival, Father’s Day Show ‘n Shine Day (car show), Seedy Saturday (swap or purchase seeds and plants, receive gardening advice, etc.), Moonlight Madness (late-night shopping, live music, photos with Santa Claus, and carollers in late November), and the Ocean Mile Swim.
